Love Gelato Shop and Laboratory Space Completed

In preparation for the heat of the summer we had the chance this past winter to work with Love Gelato in the design and construction of their new store in the West Village Area of New York. Love Gelato offers authentic Italian gelato with a master gelato chef straight from Italy. Gelato is made fresh daily in their laboratory space located on 28th Street from the highest quality ingredients imported directly from places like Piedmont and Sicily. Flavors are seasonal, approximately 18 to 24 at a time, changing depending on the fruits available at different times of the year.

In the design of their new storefront in the West Village as well as their laboratory space on 28th Street, we had the unique opportunity of working in close collaboration with one of the owners of Love Gelato who happens to be a fashion designer. We were able to implement many of his ideas in the creation of this new retail space in order to assemble a final product which is a mixture of transitional design styling, traditional Italian gelaterias, and airy Parisian cafes.

The small space (less than 800 ft2) is located within a landmark building in New York City. The plan of the shop has a fairly irregularly shaped perimeter but the space was organized efficiently in order to utilize every square foot. Along the street there are many windows as well as the two main entrances to the shop, creating a bright and open atmosphere. The lightness and transparency of the storefront gives the impression that the shop is almost spilling out onto the sidewalk.

The interior of the space is fitted with a traditional espresso bar where customers can stand and snack as well as several café tables where customers can sit back and enjoy their treats. Many elements within the space are custom made including the wainscoting and furniture. The custom benches placed along the windows which are designed to cover built-in radiators compliment the dark porcelain wood floor tiles.

Love Gelato opened their doors in early March to offer their authentic Italian gelato to the New York City crowd, so if you’re in the neighborhood you should stop by!
