We're Back With a Sports Center Update!

Despite the frigid winter and soggy spring, we have survived and are back again to give an update on the projects which have been keeping us busy over the past few months.

Even though we’ve kept you hanging on the progress of the Sports Center at Eaglebrook School we are glad to say that it was completed in early October just in time for the sporting season to begin. The addition to the Sports Center at Eaglebrook is able to maintain the character of the campus with the application of their traditional brick and wood material palette in a modern way. We were able to break up the solid exterior of the building by using brickwork patterning to express the presence of the two squash courts on the building’s interior. Additionally, the use of wooden siding on the upper edge of the addition produces a horizontal emphasis on the exterior of the new squash courts, further breaking up the solidity of the addition.

From the exterior one can see the solar panels which were installed on the roof. These panels are part of a 40 kilowatt system and contribute to the energy efficiency of the overall building. The new addition is essentially a super-insulated box which will help cut down on heating bills. We were also able to install additional roof insulation to the existing gym to significantly improve the energy performance of the Sports Center at Eaglebrook.

Although from the exterior the addition appears to be quite solid, the interior of the space is actually very open, allowing a great deal of visual freedom. By choosing to use one glass sidewall in each of the courts, squash matches can be viewed by a greater number of spectators than traditional courts. Overall, the new Sports Center at Eaglebrook School was a huge success, and the squash teams are thriving.

The varsity squash team started out their new season on their brand new courts with many new faces to match. The school’s high value in teamwork as well as learning lessons of commitment, cooperation, and sportsmanship brought the team together throughout the season. Eaglebrook went up against many of their usual opponents including Kent School, Deerfield Academy, and Pomfret School among many. They also had the opportunity to attend a couple tournaments including the Hartford Junior Squash Open and Pomfret Invitational. After months of hard work, the team successfully ended their season with an overall record of 11 wins and 5 losses.

The coach of the Eaglebrook School’s Squash Team praised their tremendous work ethic and even said, “The new courts certainly helped, as squash has never been more popular.” Although we can’t take all the credit for the team’s success, we hope that our design for the new courts assisted somewhat in Eaglebrook School squashing their opponents, so to speak.
